All Ears

Winner, Artistic Excellence Competition, Southwest Art, 12/2011 issue

These series of paintings, "Prey", The Herd",  and the more recent, " Calves and Cows", are based upon my travels to Big Sur and Central California ranches throughout  2009-2012. I approach each animal as I would a human portrait and also as a unique member of a herd. I  respond to their gestures as they reveal individuality and personality. The quality of light and atmosphere in each painting not only describes the animals' forms, they etch the season and particular time of day in my mind.  My goal is to capture the essence of these animals in as few brushstrokes as possible while being sensitive to texture, the play of light and shadow, and my emotional response to these sentient beings.  "Calves and Cows" focuses upon calves sometimes alone and often with their mothers. Each painting is an homage to a unique animal.
